AI Overviews Traffic Loss Calculator
Estimate the organic clicks and revenue Google's AI Overviews take from your site each month, using your Search Console and GA4 numbers and published click studies.

- Realistic estimates
This is an estimate. Google does not report AI Overview impressions or clicks separately in Search Console. Use the result to size the problem, then confirm it against your own query-level data.
How the calculator works
The maths runs in three steps.
- Clicks exposed. Monthly clicks × informational share × AI Overview share. These are the clicks that now compete with an AI answer.
- Clicks lost. Your current clicks are what remains after the drop. So the lost clicks are exposed clicks × drop ÷ (1 − drop). With a 34.5% drop, every 1,000 clicks you still get stand for about 527 clicks you no longer get.
- Money. Lost clicks × revenue per visit gives the monthly revenue loss. Lost clicks × CPC gives what you would pay to replace them with paid search.
Where the drop rates come from
| Source | What it measured | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Ahrefs, 17 April 2025 | 300,000 informational keywords, half with an AI Overview and half without | Top-ranking page got a 34.5% lower click-through rate when an AI Overview appeared |
| Pew Research Center, 22 July 2025 | Browsing data from 900 US adults, March 2025 | Users clicked a result on 8% of visits with an AI summary, against 15% without. That is 47% fewer clicks |
| Seer Interactive, April 2026 update | 53 brands, 5.47 million queries, 2.43 billion impressions | Organic CTR on queries with an AI Overview rose from 1.3% in December 2025 to 2.4% in February 2026, still below the 3.8% on queries without one |
The Seer figures are not a preset in the calculator because the gap moves month to month. Use the Custom option if you want to model it.
What to do with the number
Three moves cut the loss. First, get cited inside the AI Overview itself. Pages with a direct answer in the first 100 words, clear headings and schema get picked more often. Second, shift content effort from "what is" queries to comparison and buying queries, where AI Overviews show less often and visitors convert better. Third, track it. Tag your informational pages in GA4 and watch clicks per impression month over month.
We do the first two in the free SEO, GEO and AEO audit. It lists the queries where you lose clicks to an AI answer and the pages that could win the citation.
Common questions
Does Search Console show AI Overview traffic?
No. Google counts an AI Overview citation as a normal impression and click. There is no filter for it. That is why this calculator asks you to sample your top queries by hand.
Why do brand searches count for less?
Google shows AI Overviews mostly on informational queries. Someone typing your company name usually sees your site, your knowledge panel and your reviews, with no AI answer above them. Leave brand clicks out of the informational share.
Which drop rate should I pick?
Start with 34.5% from Ahrefs. It covers 300,000 keywords and measures the top result, where most sites feel the hit. Pick 47% if your traffic skews to pure information pages. Use Custom if you have compared your own clicks per impression before and after an AI Overview appeared.
Can I get traffic back from AI Overviews?
Yes. Being cited in the AI Overview sends clicks, often fewer than a classic top ranking but from people who read your answer first. Pages that answer in one or two plain sentences, back it with a number and use FAQ or HowTo schema get cited more often.
Does this cover ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini?
No. This tool models Google's AI Overviews only, because that is where the public click studies exist. The free audit covers ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Mode as well.
Do you store my numbers?
No. Everything runs in your browser. Nothing is sent to us.
