AI Chip Startup Groq Challenges Nvidia in Europe

A Silicon Valley startup is taking on tech giant Nvidia with a bold European expansion that could reshape the artificial intelligence industry. Groq, which develops specialized AI chips, just opened its first European data center in Helsinki, Finland—marking a significant challenge to Nvidia’s near-monopoly in AI hardware.

Groq’s secret weapon isn’t just another GPU—it’s something called a Language Processing Unit (LPU). These custom chips are designed specifically for AI inference—the process where trained AI models analyze new data and provide answers, like when you ask ChatGPT a question.

While Nvidia’s chips excel at training AI models (a computationally intensive but one-time process), Groq’s LPUs are optimized for the everyday task of running AI applications at lightning speed. The company claims its technology can process AI requests significantly faster than traditional solutions.

The Helsinki data center partnership with Equinix isn’t just about geography—it’s about strategy. By establishing operations in Europe, Groq is addressing several critical business needs:

This expansion comes as demand for AI infrastructure explodes globally. Groq now serves more than 20 million tokens per second across its global network, with over 356,000 developers using its cloud platform. The company recently raised $640 million in funding, valuing it at $2.8 billion.
